Around the World in 80 Days: Outward Bound [VHS] Review

Around the World in 80 Days: Outward Bound [VHS] Overview

Michael Palin started another career in the late 1980s: explorer. The former IPython/I brings humor, humanity, and class to the genre of filmed travelogues with IAround the World in 80 Days/I, his first and best journey. The genesis of this BBC series is a sly side-bet: can someone travel via 19th-century means around the world in 80 days like Jules Verne’s fictional Phileas Fogg did in 1872? As Palin travels around London asking experts about world travel, it seems to be a 50/50 chance at best. The reliance on air travel makes shipping schedules very tentative, and in some ways just slowing down may be a hardship for a 20th-century traveler. As Palin notes, air travel is about viewing airports; no one really “travels” anymore.p Armed with his inflatable globe, Palin starts off by train across Europe before problems arise: missed connections, labor strikes, language difficulties, and the like. But Palin is adorable company to have for the seven-part, six-hour series. He manages the impossible, always making us believe we are in the moment, even though some scenes had to be shot to accommodate the camera (he enters a taxi alone, the next scene we are with him in the cab). Palin is light on his feet, with quick humorous jabs, which comes in handy as his schedule is always on the brink of disaster. He offers round remarks on the countries he visits and often has amusing side trips: garbage man in Venice, bit actor in India, and cook aboard a freighter. p The highlight is the third episode, set almost entirely on a dhow slowly moving from Arabia to India. Here Palin is introduced to a life slowed down to its basics with a crew of mostly non-English speakers. The segment is so distinct the producers asked–and were granted–permission to add an additional episode instead of cutting most of the dhow footage.p Although Palin continued his adventures (IPole to Pole/I, IFull Circle/I), nothing is as nimble or kinetic–there is a ticking clock element–as this first voyage. His entourage or Passepartout–Fogg’s righthand man–grew with each voyage. There were usually two to four production folks with him on I80 Days/I, but they are rarely seen. The end result is the best travel “slide show” anchored by one of world’s most amusing men. For couch potato and traveler alike, this is compelling viewing. I–Doug Thomas/I

Around the World in 80 Days (2004) (Clam) [VHS] Overviews

The 2004 version of IAround the World in 80 Days/I is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, I24 Hour Party People/I), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days–considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes–featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung–are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. I–Bret Fetzer/I

br /This a fun little movie. Nothing profound, but good to sit through and enjoy. There are many laughs and Jackie Chan does his usual thing – a little fight here and there. I’ve watched this a few times now and I still enjoy it.

Michael Palin’s Around the World in 80 Days Overviews

Monty Python comedian/writer Michael Palin takes up the famous challenge: to travel around the world in only 80 days. Air travel is forbidden, and wherever possible he uses the same routes and transport as Jules Verne’s fictional hero, Phileas Fogg, meeting many interesting characters en route. As he races across continents and against the clock, Michael’s charm and ingenuity delights the armchair traveler.

Michael Palin’s Around the World in 80 Days CustomerReview

I watched this years ago on PBS, so I was curious to see if the DVD lived up to the fond memories I had of Palin’s adventure. It certainly did, and more. I have since purchased and viewed Palin’s New Europe series, and while I found that to be interesting it doesn’t compare with Around the World. The reason? In addition to giving us a glimpse of some fascinating people and places, Palin is in a race against the clock, which gives the whole journey an edgy feel. The host’s marvelous sense of humor is tested on several occasions, as he and the film crew overcome a series of obstacles. It all makes for highly entertaining viewing. I especially enjoyed the final episode, when Palin arrives home in England to a rather dispiriting welcome from his countrymen.

As a child Nellie Bly was nicknamed “Pink,” but as the first female “stunt” reporter she proved to be anything but a traditional woman. This hour-long PBS documentary, part of IThe American Experience/I series, examines Bly’s life and career from her mill-town childhood through her famous trip around the world and the eventual decline of her popularity. Narrated by David McCullough, the program includes interviews with biographers and historians, as well as period photographs and engravings that eloquently evoke turn-of-the-century America. But while the video provides an entertaining and informative look at Bly’s most notorious accomplishments–her clever job-hunting ruse, the 10 days she spent in an insane asylum to do research for her first exposé, her race to beat the record set by Jules Verne’s fictional character Phileas Fogg–there is one element sorely missing: Bly herself. Though she did not keep many letters or a journal, she was a reporter, and the program could have been enhanced by excerpts from her articles. That said, the tape is well worth watching as a portrait not only of a woman who refused to let society’s expectations determine her lot in life, but also of a time in America when sensational journalism resulted in social reform rather than lawsuits. I–Larisa Lomacky Moore/I

American Experience: Around the World in 72 Days CustomerReview

Nellie Bly was one of the most remarkable American women of the nineteenth century. She was the first “stunt” reporter, performing acts as a reporter in order to report her experiences in the newspapers. In this way, she was able to capitalize on her being a woman at a time when there were few advantages to being female. br / She was someone who was comfortable being the center of attention at a young age, wearing gaudy pink when most girls were wrapped in less prominent colors. She managed to get a job as a reporter for a Pittsburgh paper, but chafed at writing copy for the women’s sections. She ultimately quit the job and moved to New York. At first, she had no success in getting a job at a newspaper, but was finally hired by Joseph Pulitzer. br / However, there was a major caveat to the hire. She must first convince the health officials that she was mad and have them commit her to the notorious local insane asylum for women. After she spent several days there, she would be freed and then write an expose’ about the conditions inside the facility. This assignment was not without risk, there were documented cases of inmates being beaten to death by the staff, and the conditions inside were horrific. She survived and her story was a sensation, leading to improvements in the treatment of the insane. It also led to Pulitzer giving her a full-time job.br / She then went on to assume other guises, such as an unwed mother trying to sell her baby and a domestic servant. A public that quickly transformed her into a celebrity gobbled up her published reports. However, her greatest stunt was to take place in 1887, when she traveled around the world. Fifteen years earlier, Jules Verne had published “Around the World in Eighty Days” where his fictional English gentleman, Phineas Fogg, successfully traveled around the world in eighty days to win a bet. Of all the Verne stories, this one was the most realistic, although the idea that a woman was attempting it fueled the public passion for the story. In an idea worthy of the best public relations mind of all time, she stopped and had refreshments with Jules Verne while she was on her journey.br / I was amazed at the determination of Nellie Bly, she clearly had a powerful personality and a great deal of charm. Both of those qualities come through in this video, as we see how she was in many ways a trailblazer for the women who followed her into traditional male occupations. She was also the first true investigative reporter, literally risking her life for the story, yet her experiences were so strong, there was no need to add any sensationalistic enhancements. Yet, her celebrity status quickly faded after that, her book did not sell well and while she did do some serious reporting on civil strife and other prominent women, nothing quite the magnitude of her earlier work. Nevertheless, I was impressed by her achievements and very much enjoyed this narration of her fascinating career.br /

Phileas Fogg bet his fellow club members that he can circle the globe in eighty days. That may not be impressive today, but in 1872, it was nearly impossible. Accompanied by his valet, Passepartout, and the wandering Princess Aouda, Fogg crosses Europe, India, Japan, the Pacific and the United States.

This Mike Todd production was a star-studded, multi-million dollar extravaganza when first released in 1956. It remains enjoyable family fare, but time has somewhat dulled its shine. Still, it compares favorably to the overly long, TV mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle. P Elegant David Niven plays the neurotically punctual Phileas Fogg, a British gent who is spurned on by a wager to prove he can travel around the world in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet, played with persnickety humor by Cantinflas.P Nominated for several Academy Awards, this was written by John Farrow (Mia’s dad) and S.J. Perelman, based on Jules Verne’s 1873 classic. The fun part is the razzle-dazzle. Todd knew what he was doing with all those exotic locales and over 40 cameo appearances, including Charles Boyer, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, José Greco, Peter Lorre, Buster Keaton, Frank Sinatra, and Red Skelton. A very young Shirley MacLaine was painted and dyed to play a lively Indian Princess. I–Rochelle O’Gorman/I

Around the World in 80 Days (Two-Disc Special Edition) CustomerReview

I recently watched this on NetFlix 180+minutes of it(Intermission included), I liked it,it was entertaining, different locales, and funny.br /My main interest in it is that my grandfather is a poker table dealer in one of the parts, but I am not sure where because I can’t see(There was an original/other version?if im not mistaken),was a table dealer at tropicana(Cuba) but in the credits there is no mention of Cuba as a Location? was there a Spanish Version with Cantinflas in another location? or another Cantinflas movie?I know there was a version that hasn’t been restored? all in all this is a good movie. Despite Me not being a cantinflas fan.I would say this movie is a Gem.
