28 Days Later… [VHS] Review

28 Days Later… [VHS] Overview

The director/producer team that created iTrainspotting/i turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted–until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. i28 Days Later/i is basically an updated version of iThe Omega Man/i and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. i28 Days Later’s/i portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances–written by novelist Alex Garland (iThe Beach/i)–will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson (iThe General, Gangs of New York/i) and Christopher Eccleston (iShallow Grave, The Others/i). i–Bret Fetzer/i

The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers Review

The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers Overview

Fun takes flight with prehistoric pals Littlefoot, Cera, Petrie, Spike and Ducky in this all-new soaring adventure Parenting Magazine call “Charming and fun and dino-liciously darling!” “The Day of the Flyers,” an important event for the flyers in the Great Valley, is approaching, and free-style Petrie is having trouble flying in formation with his siblings. His friends try to help him, but a “fuzzy” newcomer named Guido gives the most helpful advice — that it’s always best to just “be yourself.” No one has ever seen anyone else like Guido, and when the gang tries to figure out what kind of dinosaur he is, their questions lead them on a thrilling journey to the Mysterious Beyond. Directed by: Charles Grosvenor

[if Young dinosaur friends Little Foot, Cera, Spike, Ducky, and Petrie are content with their lives in the Great Valley, but things keep changing and sometimes the friends just feel like they don't quite fit in. As Petrie struggles to perfect his flying for the very important Day of the Flyers, he realizes how different he is from his brothers and sisters and, while he and his friends value his uniqueness, it's causing big problems in the family's flight formations. Meanwhile, Cera is struggling with the arrival of a new baby sister and the resulting lack of attention from her father and Tria. When an odd creature named Guido shows up in the valley, Petrie befriends him and learns an important lesson about how to maintain his individuality while still contributing to his family's collaborative flight. A courageous act by Guido saves Cera's sister from peril, helping Cera realize how much she really cares about her new sister, and sparking a personal revelation that gives Guido a much better sense of his own place in the world. This is an entertaining animated show with a wholesome message about the importance of friendship, adaptability, and uniqueness. (Ages 3 to 7) I--Tami Horiuchi/I]

Men of Action Boxset (I, Robot / Rising Sun / Independence Day) Review

Men of Action Boxset (I, Robot / Rising Sun / Independence Day) Overview

[if biI, Robot/i/b: As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (iIndependence Day/i, iMen in Black/i) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in iI, Robot/i. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; iI, Robot/i, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks. Also featuring Bridget Moynahan (iThe Sum of All Fears/i), Bruce Greenwood (iThe Sweet Hereafter/i), and James Cromwell (iBabe/i, iLA Confidential/i). --iBret Fetzer/ibrbrbiRising Sun/i/b:Author Michael Crichton and director Philip Kaufman had a falling-out over the script for this film, based on Crichton's best-selling novel (which was controversial for its take on the Japanese invasion of American business in the early '90s). Kaufman ultimately won, doing an above-average job creating a murder mystery based on the culture clash between Los Angeles cops and Japanese multinational business interests. When a prostitute is murdered at the opening of a new L.A. headquarters for a Japanese company, detective Wesley Snipes is forced to call upon retired cop (and Japanophile) Sean Connery to help solve the murder. But he runs into obstruction from the Japanese, as well as a high-tech cover-up, while having to deal with anti-Japanese sentiments from people on his own team. Intriguing if overlong. --iMarshall Fine/ibrbrbiIndependence Day/i/b: In iIndependence Day/i, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. iIndependence Day/i is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, iIndependence Day/i is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --iTom Keogh/i]

100 Days Before the Command Review

100 Days Before the Command Overview

Visually astonishing, erotically charged and emotionally jarring. b 100 Days Before the Command/b is Hussein Erkenov’s courageous and stinging indictment of Communism. Five young Red Army recruits struggle for survival against the merciless violence that surrounds them on a daily basis. Their only means of saving their dignity is by preserving the humanity and compassion they share for each other. Although not an overtly gay film, Erkanov’s b100 Days Before the Command/b is remarkably direct in it’s homoerotic imagery and subtexts. The film includes scenes where the soldiers share an intimacy and tenderness that is far removed from the brutality of most of their waking hours. (Amazingly all the roles are played by real life soldiers except one professional actor.) Banned by Soviet censors upon its initial release, Erkenov was forced to create his own sales company in order for the film to be screened at the 1995 Berlin Film Festival. b 100 Days Before the Command/b is a unique entry into the world of post cold war film making from behind the former Iron Curtain.

Colosseum – A Gladiator’s Story/Pompeii – The Last Day Review

Colosseum – A Gladiator’s Story/Pompeii – The Last Day Overview

Travel back in time to the glamour and bloodshed of ancient Rome’s gladiatorial world, where men fought for their lives to satisfy the whims of emperors and a bloodthirsty populace. Combining compelling narrative with state-of-the-art computer graphics and high-quality drama reconstruction, this production throws new light on the way gladiators really fought and trained, and reveals that many of them were the superstars of their age. Colosseum: A Gladiator’s Story revolves around the true story of Verus, who rises from slave to star gladiator, but who faces the ultimate challenge in one of the very few gladiatorial fights that was recorded and described by contemporary writers. Discover Verus’ story, live his journey and experience his quest for freedom.

[if Ridley Scott's IGladiator/I is a great movie, but IColosseum: A Gladiator's Story/I has the distinct advantage of purely historical accuracy. The Roman gladiator whose story is told here is Verus (played by charismatic British hunk Robert Shannon), one of two victors in the only gladiatorial battle that was ever described in detail (by the Roman poet Martial in 80 A.D.). Using this factual record as its basis, IColosseum/I follows Verus as he is recruited from slavery, trained in gladiator's school, rises to favor among wealthy Romans, and ultimately battles his best friend, Priscus (Derek Lea), to a crowd-pleasing draw in the inaugural games of glorious, brand-new Colosseum, the construction of which is shown in fascinating detail. Combining authoritative narration with diary-like voiceovers from Verus's perspective, this riveting 50-minute BBC production is simultaneously intimate and epic in scale, employing the latest in digital compositing techniques to achieve its unparalleled (for TV, at least) visual splendor. With well-cast actors speaking authentic Latin, this sumptuous production is both dramatically involving and exacting in every detail. p Just as convincing--and just as impressive in its use of cutting-edge CGI--is the 50-minute bonus program IPompeii: The Final Day/I, which chronicles the final 24 hours of Pompeii when it was decimated by the ultraviolent eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79 A.D. Inspired by the written descriptions of Pliny the Younger (whose detailed observations were later vindicated by geological science), recovered artifacts, and the haunting remains of Pompeii citizens preserved under tons of pumice and ash, IPompeii/I is first-rate from start to finish, proving yet again that the BBC is now setting the standard in lavishly produced docudrama programming. Zoboomafoo – Play Day at Animal Junction [VHS]

Zoboomafoo – Play Day at Animal Junction [VHS] Review

Zoboomafoo – Play Day at Animal Junction [VHS] Overview

The Kratt brothers show us how playtime is also teaching time in the animal world in this second release from their popular PBS show, IZoboomafoo/I. They introduce us to Toothbrush the Elephant, and he’s just the first in a parade of animals, which includes monkeys, horses, kittens, and a few more exotic types. Chris and Martin, in typical fashion, are quick to illustrate to preschoolers the most interesting traits of the animals. Monkeys, they explain, seem to be playing when they pound an object around. But then the Kratts show us (with video footage of monkeys in the wild) that that is how they find their food, pounding bark from trees to get the insects crawling around underneath. Combining live-action, claymation, animation, puppetry, and the Kratts’ exuberant energy, this 50-minute video should be a favorite with the animal lover at your house. I–Doug Thomas/I
