Natural Born Babies – Modern Day, Natural Childbirth Overviews

Natural Born Babies presents a modern account of today’s natural childbirth. Told by 10 mothers, this program chronicles their journeys to challenge the conventional hospital birth model to give birth in their own way. Resurgence interest in natural childbirth has led a record number of women to midwife-directed centers, where high-quality care combined with a nurturing environment is at the forefront of a movement. This movement seeks to dispel the inaccurate picture and practices of modern Western medicine. Gone are the days when midwifery was primitive and outdated. The modern midwife is presented in this film as she puts women and children first. Lorri Walker, RNC, NP, CNM, one of Southern California’s best-known midwives, shares her insights and wisdom overcoming the medical model of birth. Birth professionals often overlook and disregard important subjects about birth. Hear an honest account of birth plans, Cesarean Sections, safety, unnecessary interventions and reluctant fathers as they are addressed – perfect for persuading any skeptic. This program attempts to separate midwifery from a tarnished reputation and years of misinformation and negative publicity that has been propagated by the medical community.piThis product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day Review

New Year’s Day Overview

At a critical mid-life moment. Drew (Henry Jaglom) leaves L.A. and flies to Manhattan in hopes of starting his life anew. He has sublet an apartment beginning January 1, but finds that it is still occupied by three young women who insist that their lease runs through the first. The next 24 hours will have a lifetime’s impact on Drew and the women: Annie (Gwen Welles), Winona (Melanie Winters) and most especially Lucy (Maggie Jakobson), as the film explores modern life, love… and New Year’s resolutions!
[endif]
[if iNew Year's Day/i is verbose, discursive, and even a little insightful. It can only be the handiwork of idiosyncratic independent filmmaker Henry Jaglom. Tired of his miserable life in Los Angeles, newly single writer Drew (Jaglom) moves back to New York--on New Year's Day. Due to a misunderstanding, his apartment is still occupied three tenants: Annie (Gwen Welles), Winona (Melanie Winter), and Lucy (Maggie Wheeler, Chandler's whiny girlfriend Janice on iFriends/i). With nowhere to go until they move out the next day, Drew gets to know the women. And vice versa. He's bewildered by the overly-emotional Annie and forthright Winona and attracted to the compassionate Lucy, who plans to relocate to LA. Over the next 24 hours, a variety of people drop by, including Lucy's mother and father, building supervisor Lazlo (Oscar-winning director Milos Forman), and unfaithful ex-boyfriend Billy (David Duchovny, Wheeler's actual ex, who rejoins Jaglom for iVenice/Venice/i). Shot like a documentary, iNew Year's Day/i feels improvised, which is its biggest strength--and biggest weakness. Duchovny, who has a brief nude scene, looks perpetually bemused, while Jaglom comes off like a patronizing parental figure. Which may be the point. At times, it resembles real life; at others, a party to which you weren't invited. So, Jaglom's third in a semi-autobiographical trilogy, after iAlways/i (1985) and iSomeone to Love/i (1987), may not be a complete success, but it's an entertaining diversion, and Wheeler shines in a rare lead role. i--Kathleen C. Fennessy/i]

Dog Day Afternoon [VHS]

Dog Day Afternoon [VHS] Review

Dog Day Afternoon [VHS] Overview

A gripping true crime yarn, a juicy slice of overheated New York atmosphere, and a splendid showcase for its young actors, iDog Day Afternoon/i is a minor classic of the 1970s. The opening montage of New York street life (set to Elton John’s lazy “Amoreena”) establishes the oppressive mood of a scorching afternoon in the city with such immediacy that you can almost smell the garbage baking in the sun and the water from the hydrants evaporating from the sizzling pavement. Al Pacino plays Sonny, who, along with his rather slow-witted accomplice Sal (John Cazale, familiar as Pacino’s iGodfather/i brother Fredo), holds hostages after a botched a bank robbery. Sonny finds himself transformed into a rebel celebrity when his standoff with police (including lead negotiator Charles Durning) is covered live on local television. The movie doesn’t appear to be about anything in particular, but it really conveys the feel of wild and unpredictable events unfolding before your eyes, and the whole picture is so convincing and involving that you’re glued to the screen. An Oscar winner for original screenplay, iDog Day Afternoon/i was also nominated for best picture, actor, supporting actor (Chris Sarandon, as a surprise figure from Sonny’s past), editing, and director (Sidney Lumet of iSerpico/i, iPrince of the City/i, iThe Verdict/i, and iRunning on Empty/i). i–Jim Emerson/i

End of Days

End of Days Review

End of Days Overview

After a two-year hiatus that included recovery from heart surgery, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the big screen in November 1999 with IEnd of Days/I, a Thanksgiving turkey if ever there was one. Overcooked and bloated with stuffing, this ludicrous thriller attached itself to the end-of-the-millennium furor that kicked in a year too early. A prologue begins in 1979 with panic in the Vatican when a comet signals the birth of a child who will, 20 years later, become the chosen bride of Satan, destined to conceive the devil’s spawn between 11 p.m. and midnight on December 31, 1999. It’s hard to decide who has the more thankless role–Robin Tunney as Satan’s would-be bride, or Schwarzenegger as Jericho Cane, the burned-out alcoholic bodyguard assigned to protect the girl from Satan, billed as “The Man” and played with cheesy menace (and an inconsistent variety of metaphysical manifestations) by Gabriel Byrne.p With kitschy character names like Jericho and Chicago (Arnie’s partner, played by Kevin Pollack) and lapses in logic that any 5-year-old could spot, IEnd of Days/I is a loud, aggravating movie that would be entertaining if it were intended as comedy. But Schwarzenegger and director Peter Hyams approach the story as an earnest tale of redemption and tested faith, delivering a ridiculous climax full of special effects and devoid of dramatic impact. You’re left instead to savor the verbal and physical sparring between Satan and Jericho, resulting in the most thorough pummeling Schwarzenegger’s ever endured onscreen. Of course he eventually gets his payback, just in time for New Year’s Eve. Perhaps he was touched by an angel. I–Jeff Shannon/I
