My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown Overviews
Daniel Day-Lewis won a much-deserved Oscar for his wily, passionate performance as Irish artist and writer Christy Brown, whose cerebral palsy kept him confined to a wheelchair. Filmmaker Jim Sheridan (iIn the Name of the Father/i) adapts Brown’s own autobiography for this spirited piece, focusing on the sometimes-difficult fellow’s formative years in his large family and in love with sundry women. Day-Lewis is inspired, and Brenda Fricker (also a recipient of an Oscar for her part in this movie) is almost luminous as Christy’s dedicated mother. So, too, are Ray McAnally as the hero’s stormy father, and Hugh O’Conor (iThe Young Poisoner’s Handbook/i) as the child Christy. All in all, this is a complete pleasure for viewers. I–Tom Keogh/I

My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown CustomerReview
There has never been a better portrayal of Ireland. br /br /Most of my people come from the isle and I type those words with pride. ‘My Left Foot’ presents all that is good and bad about the people of Ireland. It does so with no apologies, preaching or politics.br /br /There is NOTHING depressing about this movie; anyone believes so, misses the point.br /br /It’s a masterpiece, and I WANT to argue with those who say otherwise.br /br /I write with confidence that film classes, historians, and actors will be dissecting this movie 100 years from now. There are very few films for which this reviewer would state that claim.br /br /It needs to be seen more than once. On first viewing, I felt sympathy for Christy. The second time I realized that this man never asked for my pity.
