All Creatures Great Small: The Complete Series 2 Collection (Repackage) CustomerReview

When James Herriot’s first book came out decades ago, I was a neophyte book reviewer for a big city newspaper. At the time, I predicted that the book would be a smash hit. It surpassed any expectations my imagination could have conjured up. Later, the British TV series picked up the ball and ran with it. br /Whenever I’m down-in-the-dumps, I pick up the Series 2 collection and put on the Christmas at Skeldale House episode, which comprises all that is so heartwarming about the series, including the finding and bringing home of the Christmas tree, the healing of a little girl’s beloved pony, and the gift of the mistletoe. If I were marooned on a desert island, this is one of the collections I would want with me. One never tires of the evocative opening musical theme, nor of traveling to England’s pre-WW II Yorkshire Dales to once more be in the presence of the irascible Siegfried, the dedicated James and his patient wife, the hormonal Tristan, and the Darrowby regulars, including Tricky Woo and Mrs. Pumphrey. br /br /The series belongs in a space capsule so a thousand years from now, if civilization has survived, viewers can discover some of the best of times that existed before some of the worst of times.br /br /Having grown up on a farm, I well recall the veterinarian’s visits, so I should add a warning — Be prepared: Impressionable young children may ask a lot of questions, such as, “Why does that man have his hand inside the cow?” or, in the birthing scenes, “How did that baby lamb get inside the mother?” There is a scene of a horse being gelded, and also a few scenes of animals being euthanized. They are low-key and not sensationalized, but could easily disturb a sensitive child, so parents may want to pre-view the series and decide whether they find such scenes suitable for child viewers, especially those prone to nightmares. Aside of that, I can’t think of a better introduction to the rewards of helping animals and being kind to them than the Herriot series.

These films set the cheese factor higher than the whole state of Wisconsin. The special effects are neither special nor effective. The only thing less believable than the plots are the actors. The number of visible wires is only exceeded by the number of cliches. Make yourself ready for a romp through the psyche of the time and stand in awe of how far we’ve come. This is the Science Fiction of the 1950s where suspension of disbelief was the only art form available. And yet, half a century later some of us still love them. Why? Because for the imagination that craved more than a police drama, a romance, a soap, a western or a war story–this was it. There was nothing else. Because, well, they were fun. The films in this collection are wonderful examples of how to tell a story with no help from the studios, no computer effects, no scientific background and a budget of four dollars and seventy three cents. Young people, when you view them please forgive these movies their glaring flaws because without them there could never have been a Star Wars, a Transformers, a Spiderman or a hundred others titles.

Around the World in 80 Days (2004) (Clam) [VHS] Overviews

The 2004 version of IAround the World in 80 Days/I is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, I24 Hour Party People/I), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days–considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes–featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung–are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. I–Bret Fetzer/I

br /This a fun little movie. Nothing profound, but good to sit through and enjoy. There are many laughs and Jackie Chan does his usual thing – a little fight here and there. I’ve watched this a few times now and I still enjoy it.

Teacher’s Pet [VHS] Overviews

Clark Gable’s bluff masculinity is a big part of the story and appeal of ITeacher’s Pet/I, to such a degree that his age (near 60) doesn’t seem like such a problem as he romances perky Doris Day. Gable is an old-school newspaperman who scoffs at the idea of journalism being taught in night school; hard knocks and shoe leather are his preferred textbooks. Naturally, Doris teaches journalism in night school. Gable masquerades as an inexperienced student in order to prove her wrong, which brings forth some fairly labored complications, presented in pedestrian style by director George Seaton. The film is too long for its own good, but as an illustration of movie-star value, it’s a convincer–Gable and Day are completely, effortlessly within their established personas. Gig Young adds pep as a brainy psychologist (whose expertise extends to hangover recipes–he and Gable have a good morning-after scene). Doris sings the incorrigibly catchy title song over the opening credits, but stick around for Mamie Van Doren’s nightclub rendition of “The Girl Who Invented Rock ‘n Roll,” a real eye-roller. I–Robert Horton/I

Teacher’s Pet [VHS] CustomerReview

Whatever flaws this film may have aren’t even worth mentioning. There is sensuality floating around all over the place, how much you’re picking up depends on where your head is at. It’s everywhere, but mostly very subtle. It’s cute, smart, funny, and a tease. Doris Day in her prime could sponge water out of a couch cushion and guys would line up to drink it. You can tell they’re really having fun in this film, they’re playing with the camera,…..you. And there is a well delivered romantic and sentimental effect to balance the equation, and leave a warm feeling inside. Fine actors who really know what they’re doing is what makes this film, that and clever dialogue.br /

New York Day and Night

New York Day and Night Overviews

This is not a sight seeing film but a journey through light and darkness reflected on the city of New York.
You do not often see the people walking on the streets or in the buildings. But you may feel the air and the light are coming and going through. It’s not a deserted city, but full of energy that is there even without the people. You see the wind is blowing as the bubbles are floating over Wall Street and between the high-buildings. Then up, up to the sky. The Sun sets under the Washington Bridge where all the cars are running slowly like ants. The night falls down among the skyscrapers yet the horizon is still light.
Suddenly people are everywhere on 42nd street but they look like silhouettes. Only neon lights are active under the moon. A mysterious figure in silhouette stands alone by the dark wall, or the same figure by the huge unpainted billboard. Later in the park he is reflected on the telephone booth. He still has no voice. Behind him the sound of a waterfall may be heard. The indoor gardens are awakening. The plants and the fruits are growing under the artificial light and over the glass window. People are sleeping while the darkness prevails. A shadow of the silhouette-man casts over a tomb under the light from the window that is still brightening.(T.I)

Zoids: Chaotic Century is one of my favorite animes. When I saw the DVD at Borders, I nearly blacked out. It was only 15 dollars, so I bought it. As soon as I’d gotten home, I popped it in my DVD player and was practically in Nirvana, but was a bit disappointed.br /br /The downside of this DVD is simply that this is the edited English dub, meaning that that the DVD was in kids’ format sadly. There should be a bilingual version, and the episodes on this are some of the most questionable ones to be aired on CN, they should have left them undedited. These are great epidsodes, wrong version. If you want to watch Zoids at its best, download the Japanese version, it’s better.

7 Days CHINA Overviews

China’s Imperial City is located in the centre of its ancient Middle Kingdom, a gigantic and inscrutable empire beyond the Great Wall. The Imperial City is entered through the Gates of Heavenly Peace. After seven years of construction, Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved into his newly-established palace complex in which over eight thousand people lived in almost a thousand rooms. The palace served as both a residential and governmental seat to the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.A stone’s throw away from the old Summer Palace is the Garden of Harmonious Unity that was the favourite garden of the Emperor’s household who retreated to its cool lakeside shores during the humid months of summer.Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. On one side the Central Asian Nomads and on the other the highly developed civilisation of the emerging Chinese Empire.Shanghai is a Gigantic City and a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city’s main focal point and is a combination of past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye catching buildings of a great city. Famous explorer Marco Polo referred to Suzhou as the ‘Venice of the East’, a city that is particularly famous for its gardens. Many of its extremely elegant buildings are remnants of a glorious past.Yunnan’s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares.Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades.China is a world within a world!piThis product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), WIDESCREEN, SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Commentary, Filmographies, Interactive Menu, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Gillian Armstrong directed this quietly bittersweet and coldly ironic examination of the death throes of a crumbling marriage. Set in the lush summer light of Sydney, the film examines the dying marriage of Beth (Lisa Harrow), a middle-aged writer living with her French husband J.P. (Bruno Ganz) and her teenage daughter Annie (Miranda Otto). Beth and J.P. are maintaining their marriage through a delicate thread of disinterest and patronizing that is torn asunder with the arrival of Beth’s younger sister Vicki (Kerry Fox). Along with the arrival of Vicki, Beth and J.P. take in a boarder, a clean-cut teen named Tim (Kiri Paramore). These two new additions to the family infuse the home with a new vitality, but that only holds the dissolution of the marriage in abeyance for a time. In an effort to make peace with her father (Bill Hunter), Beth takes him on a trip to the outback, where she believes she might be able to communicate with him. With Beth gone, J.P. and Vicki have an affair, and they abandon the family to start life on their own. Beth, now alone, feels a sense of liberation and purpose and begins to start her life anew. This is classic Gillian Armstrong giving us a snapshot of inner-urban life in a Sydney home one long humid summer.br /br /JP (played brilliantly by Bruno Ganz who was so memorable in Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire”) is a Frenchman far from home. With his marriage to Beth (a woman whose vitality seems to have been snuffed out by marriage) already under stress, it takes only the arrival of Beth’s wild and vibrant sister Vicki to send everything spinning out of control.br /br /Vicki is Beth mirror image – but she is a reflection of what Beth once was. Beth longs to be wild and alive once more but that can never be. JP sees in Vicki what attracted him to Beth – and alone and longing for something that he can’t find Down Under, JP drifts apart from Beth as she does from him.br /br /But Beth has another problem – unresolved issues with her father (played by Bill Hunter who seems to be everywhere in Australian movies). Her father has all the personality of a prune, and won’t admit his oldest child is now a grown woman with a mind of her own.br /br /Beth, played in a deeply stressed manner by beautiful NZ actress Lisa Harrow, finds is being tossed about from the roles of mother, daughter and wife all at once – and she’s the one that is left to suffer.br /br /Truly a brilliant film, with a young Miranda Otto in the role of Beth’s all-observing but resilient daughter, this is a touching film that captures much of the tension of our lives that will often cannot identify.

A video of picturesque still life images of colonial sites and wares accompanied by the sound of occasional horsedrawn carriages, a door creaking, clanking of fireplace cooking, harpsichord music, etc. With the introduction of each segment or chapter, if you will, there was a zoom on the plaque of that particular historic site, then the tour into the building began with the still lifes. Faded overlays of transitioning images were creative in areas such as showing 18th C. portraits through windows, etc. as if to remind us that they were once there. However, after a while, I found the slow fading in/out to be fatiguing on my eyes and had rather wished that they’d just click to the next image or find a different means of transitioning. There was no narrative accompaniment which may be important to some potential buyers. My motivation was not so much to be educated on any particular site. Rather, I was merely seeking visual entertainment, which this is indeed. Being a still life artist and enamoured with all things of the 18th century, I found the photography to be absolutely beautiful and for that alone, I highly recommend this video.
