The rippy transient response of Image S2 reveals deep down audio nuances with a precision usually found only in higher-priced buds. The honesty of presentation almost requires good source material. The S2 is fairly unforgiving of background artifacts, mediocre fidelity, inferior codecs, inept mix downs, etc… GIGO is rendered with brutal detail! br /br /No, S2 bass response will not astound but won’t overwhelm either. That to me is the nature of Image S2 earbuds. Sonic neutrality might better describe their character though one may feel that the high end octaves shimmer. The lack of coloration might take some getting used to. Soundstage improves radically simply by experimenting with proper positioning into the ear. Therein lays the magic of the Klipsch Image S2 at this reasonable entry point. br /br /At first I likened the Klipsch Image S2 buds to my Sennheiser PX 100 over ear portables, another truly great yet inexpensive set of headphones I don’t have to crank up for impact. After considerable comparison I realized that the S2s are capable of intimacy most sound engineers would prefer you didn’t hear, such as the subtle rustle of sheet paper a reporter might shuffle on their table top during a news cast, or phones ringing in the background outside radio station sound booths. To me it is uncanny that the clarity level of S2 can approach eerie at times. I mean, these buds are just entry level – a glimpse into why people lay down the big $$ to pursue accuracy and ambience to 4-figure extremes. br /br /There are many types of phones for many purposes. I’ve got half a dozen myself, spread across a wide type and price range. Each has its place. I wouldn’t use my Etymôtic and Shure earphones for anything that wasn’t studio grade from disc through electronics. That’s where the S2 buds fit in; general use on the go without over-the-top performance that misfits most portable devices.
br /br /The sound isolation alone is superior for tuning out noisy environments. As many have noted, S2 buds are wonderfully comfortable even for extended periods. The microphonic nuisance inherent to IEMs is acceptably low key with this model. IMHO, for the price you could do worse but not really better. br /
